Brisbane Weekend Notes

Award winning article by Alison from the Brisbane Information Centre in the Queen Street Mall. She wrote: Of course you are feeling a bit peckish after all that exercise, but Dave has this well in hand. How about a beach barbecue with the casuarinas and the rolling ocean as your backdrop? Dave is so keen on having you relax, he refuses all offers of help, except for the passing around of the delicious snags and salads. Dave's customised tours can be booked at Straddie Kingfisher Tours.
Now you are feeling truly relaxed away from the workaday world, but it is time to exercise the brain cells as well as the body, with some local history. The Stradbroke Island Historical society, run by enthusiastic volunteers, has prepared heritage trails for Point Lookout, Amity Point, and Dunwich. Whilst in Dunwich go for an historic walk around taking in the cemetery. Stradbroke has a sad history of institutions, and over 8,000 of their inhabitants are buried in the picturesque grounds.
This cemetery in Queensland's second oldest cemetery and dates back to 15 September 1850.

NEW Sand Boards have arrived.

Yes here are three lovely French girls trying out our NEW sand boards.
I believe they have a break in period when everything is loose and the boards can be turned and manouvered easily.
We tried them out yesterday 28 April and put them through their paces.
Yes very surprised how fast they went.
We were given special wax to put on the boards to maximise the speed and this certainly works well.
So why don't you give the new boards a go and book online for your sand boarding experience. BOOK NOW!
Just a reminder that Whale watching season is just about ready to kick off as we have seen the first of the Humpback whales sighted from Main Beach last year on 5 May 2012. Our bussiest day last years was a count of 147 whales in one day. Hope this year brings more. LIKE US on Facebook to keep up with the count.

We managed to find a day and get out for a 4WD Eco Tour. This day was perfect with just enough sun for our International guests.
I have been busy upgrading our web site and would love to hear from you with your feedback.

Your feedback needs to be super critical as we are trying to get our web site up to a high standard so we desperately need you comments.

Looks like some half decent weather is on its way for the week with only threats of thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday. The rest of the week should be quite hot 28-29 degrees.

So please have a look at our web site www.straddiekingfishertours.com.au and give us your feedback and then explore all the tours we have to offer and we hope one will suit you so go ahead and book now enjoy life.

Our newsletter should be out next week and for those who are not on our list please subscribe to it on our Home page or on the About Us page so you don’t miss out on any specials and local gossip.

Till then keep dry and safe and hope to see you on Straddie soon.

Barefoot Dave.

BEACH CLOSURES

20/2/2013

Straddie Camping has advised everyone to keep off Main Beach as the erosion is just too bad. The entrances to the camp grounds on Main Beach are closed due to the tidal surge forming a wall of sand wiping out the road entrances to the camping sites.
We will be advised as to when we can proceed. So in the mean time please pray for the stoppage of the tide and rain destruction.

Oswald visits Straddie!

27/1/2013

Yes the remnants of cyclone "Oswald" which started above Cairns visited us starting on Australia Day 26 January 2013 to dump plenty of water upon us and uproot some of the more vulnerable trees.

Ironic as it is because the last blog was about getting your property ready for the fire season.

Nevertheless all is well and no permanent damage was done but it will still give the Council boys plenty of cleanup work in the coming weeks.

Bushfire awareness.........are YOU prepared?

Bushfire Survival Plan

Whether you live in the city, on the urban fringe or in regional or rural Queensland, it is essential you have a Bushfire Survival Plan.
Your bushfire survival plan details how you’ll prepare and what action you will take if threatened by a bushfire. A well-prepared home has an increased chance of survival in a bushfire.
During a large-scale event, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) will not be able to place a fire truck at every property so it is therefore even more important to have a solid plan in place.
The first step is simple, make a commitment to do it! Your plan must be written down and practised regularly and should take into consideration the ages and physical capabilities of everyone in your household including children and elderly residents.
Your plan needs to take into account what you will do based on the Fire Danger Rating (see page 3). On days of catastrophic and extreme fire weather the QFRS advises that people leave the area well in advance of any fire (the night before or early in the morning is recommended). So you need to decide under what conditions you will stay (if any) and when it would be best to leave well in advance of a fire.
Children, the elderly and those who are vulnerable are advised to leave well before a bushfire threatens and should not be part of any plans to stay with your property.
For information and advice about Bushfire Survival Plans, prepare your bushfire survival plan click please download the BUSHFIRE SURVIVAL PLAN leaflet - good preparation is the key to survival and the protection of your property.

Straddie's fire update.....

15/12/2012

The fire on Straddie started in bushland on Saturday 8 December and lasted 5 days. This was a particularly nasty fire because of the hot, dry and windy conditions that made it hard to put out. However on the last day and mind you we had got it under control, Mother Nature provided a good dose of rain that had eluded us for those 5 days.
There were lost homes within the bush area so it became a trying time for some residents. We wish them all the very best and they know the Community is behind them all the way!
Hope there are no more fires of this type this or next year.
